Education leaders face a series of mounting challenges, from fierce political attacks and threats of losing funds, to declining enrollments and disappointing test scores in many K-12 schools, with a public expecting a greater return on their investments. Education leaders and school board members are somehow expected to solve these problems—while keeping teachers inspired, parents informed, and students learning.

Education on the Line offers clarity through conversations with the people doing the work—helping leaders cut through the noise and stay focused on what matters most: student success.

Hosted by media innovator and veteran education reporter, Louis Freedberg, each episode goes beyond the headlines to help education leaders, elected officials and advocates make sense of the range of challenges facing America’s schools—and how those on the front lines are responding with courage and creativity.

Louis has spent over three decades reporting for a range of media outlets, including the San Francisco Chronicle, Center for Investigative Reporting, and EdSource, and as a contributor to a range of media outlets, including the New York Times, Washington Post, National Public Radio, Los Angeles Times and New America Media. He was the founding director of Youth News in Oakland, CA, one of the first youth media projects in the United States, and California Watch at the Center for Investigative Reporting, the first journalism initiative focusing on California. He also led EdSource’s transformation into a model for state-based education reporting. He worked in the schools with special education students, and has a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from UC Berkeley.
